Things I love Sunday
(Requested)
- Perfumeman. Performing! Friday night people told me I “shred” the cello, whic is pretty cool. We have a website and everything (hello, 2001). We also have lots of stuff in the works, I can’t wait to show everyone.
- New technology: new phone, new laptop, new loop pedal on the way.
- Living with Charles. It’s pretty fucking great.
- Being vegan. It’s rad, you should try it.
- Other cool shit: Candles. Reading in cafes. Wearing ancient jewelry. Cell phone photos. Decorating. Extensive spice racks. Meeting new people. Curb Your Enthusiasm. Throwing house shows. Making London plans. Random tarot card readings. Hanging out with popular bands and thinking that they’re kind of doucey but not being able to tell anyone about it because no one likes people who name-drop. Good coffee. Giving people a nice introduction to the cello. Gay club promotional art from the 1970s. Shorts that fit really well. Eating avocados and grapes and seeds before recording. Feeling skinny. Having a new journal to write in. Coconut pudding. Flowers on my block. Running into people I know and looking good.
Me and Chuck at the Lion’s Lair after playing a small show. Friends/fellow musicians Abi and Sean had a paparazzi-battle, much to my delight, and I think this is my favorite of the bunch.
Wish list
- Bright yellow eye shadow
- Black skinny jeans which fit me
- One of those clunky fancy cameras
- A loop pedal
- An octave pedal
- A drum machine
- A ride to work tomorrow so I won’t freeze in the snow
- A bowl of hot soup and someone to take care of me
- I dunno, maybe some pizza too
London is getting both younger and older—and above all bigger. A baby boom is among the startling demographic changes sending the city’s planners back to the drawing board.
This picture is so good.
No creeper
The other day at a Colfax bus stop I was approached by a man with only a few yellow, gnarled teeth who said
You know who you remind me of? You know. An actress? She got caught stealing? That’s right, Winona Ryder. High-five Winona! Yeah, you’ve got beautiful light brown eyes, beautiful brown hair, and beautiful *pause while he looks me up and down* conversation.
Thanks, gross Colfax guy. Thanks so much.
There’s more to life than books you know, but not much more.
Things I love Saturday
Going to shows where the doorman is surprised I’m not on the guest-list that night. Playing cello every day. Doing cardio to clear my stuffy nose. Orange juice. The Magnetic Fields. Making up with an old friend. New music. Keeping my apartment clean. The days getting longer. Re-reading the Stranger in coffee shops. My cello teacher telling me I’m her most advanced student. The weather getting warm enough that I can wear my faux-leather jacket instead of my big winter coat. Bass lessons. Sailor hats. Dreaming of travelling to New York. Browsing for a cello pick-up and lusting after expensive mics. Giant/long earrings. Green curry. White nail polish.
Brief update entry
A few days ago I put up a small tree with white lights while listening to Sinatra and Elvis and Bing Cosby and Eartha Kitt. Last night I played an open mic with Chuck: me on cello, him guitar, vocals both. Right now I’m drinking hot Apple cider in a new part of town. This week it’s holiday shopping, and soon celebrations with my family and then Chuck’s in San Diego.
Things are going well.
Holiday wish list
For all my interested family & friends looking to delight me.
♥ Cello-related: a collapsible cello stand, cello lessons, a humidifier, or a set of Dominant strings.
♥ An electric bass guitar and a soft case for it; just something cheap and decent that I can play around with. I don’t need an amp or any other accessories.
♥ Clothes: Black matte hold-up stockings (the kind that need a garter belt, not the kind that stay up on their own), with or without seams in the back; a thick plum purple scarf; black cashmere leggings; well-fitted colorful sweaters.
♥ A luggage rack for my bike.
♥ Yoga classes.
♥ An external battery or wall charger for my phone.
♥ Hand-written letters or postcards telling me where you are, what you like about me, or something awesome.
♥ A great vegan soy hot chocolate and good conversation in a cute café. Also good: hot apple cider and peppermint tea.
♥ Recommendations for: vegan or raw restaurants and recipes; a great tailor/cobbler; thrift stores and Asian markets in Denver; an amazing hairdresser; music you think I would like.
♥ A gift card for Lush body products or MAC cosmetics or Sol Lingerie or the Tattered Cover bookstore or a great stationery store.
♥ Anything that you think I need; something that will be useful to me or make me happy without creating more material clutter in my life.
I mean, it’s round, how difficult can it be?The front-desk attendant at the Renaissance Hotel in Carmel, exasperated, when asked whether visitors struggle to navigate the town’s many roundabouts. Carmel now has 70—all safer, faster and more efficient than the traffic lights they have replaced. (via theeconomist)

Things I love Saturday
♥ Job prospects. I have three interviews on Monday for three great socio-political organizations: Grassroots Campaigns, Rape Assistance and Awareness Program, and the Human Rights Campaign working with the Fund for the Public Interest. These don’t all have name recognition for most people, but it’s such a big deal to me to have the opportunity to work with groups that not only challenge me and allow me to explore my interests but make huge positive differences in my community. Check them out!
Tl;dr. I am so excited!
♥ New relationship. Chuck is wonderful: he’s fun and sweet and handsome and creative and supportive and adventurous and challenging and smart and stylish. He likes Woody Allen films and 100 Years of Solitude and writing silly pop songs. Upon meeting him my life changed entirely and we were attached within hours; three days later we flew off together on a spontaneous vacation that everyone thought was crazy, and it was the best thing ever. Sometimes we write stupid pop songs together. I like him very much.
♥ Family time. My mom and my brother are amazing. Both helped me move despite my throwing a fit, and I love them so much. I talk to Mom almost every day and Spencer came to visit this week and we watched Rubber (about a tire named Robert; it reminded me of Beckett with a hint of Lynch). I can’t wait for Thanksgiving when I’ll cook for them and they’ll meet Chuck’s mom and her husband!
♥ My apartment. It’s a one bedroom with a proper bathtub and it’s kind of gorgeous. I thrifted all my furniture except for the bed from my mom’s house and a new couch and it all looks great. And there’s so much room! My cello and music stand are just out, and there’s plenty of space for the couch, coffee table, bookshelf, dining table and really cool antique chairs. The kitchen has this retro brown stove and I’ve given it red accents. I want to have dinner parties and salons and sleepovers and shindigs here! I even want uninvited guests!
♥ Etcetera. Thanksgiving plans! Playing my cello regularly. Reading regularly. Singing Frank Sinatra and Death Cab for Cutie. Riding my bike around town. Keeping in touch with old friends. Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Finally feeling happy and having fun again.
